Group Facilitation

Based in Experience, Connection, and Collaboration

Why choose El Tapia-Kwan?

El (he/him) is a formerly in-person arts educator, teacher, facilitator, and art therapy - informed contractor. With over a decade of experience working in various community spaces and contexts, (including carceral, academic, non-profit, recovery, and therapeutic,) El is a versatile provider of communal, individual, and trauma-informed group sessions.

While most of El's resume may boast a career in the visual arts, he has also worked tirelessly in social, mental, and public health on and off the clock for years. His additional coursework in Communications, Counseling, and Art Therapy is apparent in the ways that he fosters connection between participants, staff, custodians, and all other levels of management, regardless of the institution. With personal affirmations and wholehearted validation, he brings self- confidence to the self-conscious, calm to the chaos, and joy to those full of rage.

His favorite populations to work with are "Anxious Adults and Angry Adolescents," with a special passion for marginalized groups who face stigma and oppression due to their past actions, identities, appearance, or experience.

Now disabled and no longer able to transport supplies or perform physical labor, El offers his expertise and enthusiasm to virtual spaces in need of guidance, education, facilitation, and more! This adaptation makes his offerings more accessible to himself and others.

Facilitation Options and Opportunities:

If you do not see what you are looking for here, still reach out to see how we can work together!

Whether for Mental Health patients, clients with Disabilities, self-identified Addicts, incarcerated Youth, Unhoused / Homeless folks, or LGBTQIA+ youth and adults; El is experienced and enthusiastic to add his facilitation services to your programming.

He has worked with the above populations to make murals, paintings, sculptures, pottery, ceramics, 3D projects, storyboards, signs, and more. Always led by curiosity, inspiration, and feedback from the participants themselves, he creates opportunities for self-expression and advocacy to those who may have been shut down or stifled by others.

Without fear of live reactions or recording, El excels at keeping pace and practiced at fielding input from multiple sources at once! He has facilitated panels both in-person and virtually, while also hosting interviews with Black and Brown creatives, artists, and culture-bearers.

To his great delight, El's favorite panel facilitation memories come from international conversations with contemporary creators on the topics of Polyamory, Race, Ethical Non-Monogamy, and long-distance relationships. It is his dream to continue to expand his offering of facilitation to other alternative groups, lifestyles, orientations, and identities.

Book El to train your team with personable delivery, efficient communication, and special consideration for your Neurodiverse teammates.

From Teaching to Fine Art to Accessibility, El is the studio godfather of your dreams offering real-world techniques that can be adapted to your space and students!

If your team needs additional Sensitivity training regarding Race, Expression, Pronouns, Sexuality, or Disability through a Social Justice lens, El has you covered with personal and professional experience navigating the nuanced and not-so-new world of considerate communication.

El hosts yearly "Good Grief Gatherings" through his passion project Uppercutt .

The purpose of these gatherings is to bring aligned, empathetic people together to share, process, and (ironically) celebrate the grief that guides us toward a more liberated future.

Being no stranger to grief himself, El creates space for the overwhelming, complicated, and often isolating feelings that arise from personal and communal loss. He acknowledges that grief is not only for those who have passed away, but for the pieces of ourselves that we must bury, the future plans we must lay to rest, and the collective grief of conditions that bring death, dishonor, and fear to all people and our planet.

El believes in a Free Palestine, a world where Black Lives Matter to everyone, and Disability Justice; meaning that wearing a mask to prevent the spread of ongoing illness and life-threatening respiratory risks is the bare minimum for allies.

El values both art and craft as instruments of expression that deserve to be enjoyed by all. That's why he takes extra time to check in with each person's unique strengths, challenges, abilities, and disabilities when teaching, instructing, facilitating, or guiding. Sometimes that means making a new tool for someone with physical limitations, or re-framing a prompt to better relate to a participant with a different perception of the world.

This drive to respond to cognitive and physical diversity with adjustments and acceptance propels El to consider accessibility in all he does. Whether you are an arts instructor adapting your tools to your students' abilities, a community organizer in search of an inclusive craft table guide, or a clinician seeking a workshop for your diverse clients - you are in the right place with the right person.
